While not an overly superstitious man, French dictator Napoleon Bonaparte was known to have a few quirks that influenced his behavior. Among them was a fear of Friday the 13th, belief in a lucky star, omens of good fortune & doom, and perhaps most famous, a good luck coin that had served him well up until the day he lost it on the eve of his final defeat at Waterloo in 1815. The coin in question was an Angel coin designed Augustine Dupré in the late 1700s. Dupré, helped fuel the legend behind the coin’s ability to provide good luck by claiming that its angelic image was imbued with a protective force. Dupré himself is rumored to have used one as a bribe to escape the sharp blade of the guillotine after he fell out of favor with French King Louis XVI. As a result, the French Angel came to gain world renown as an emblem of luck.
